Varric Tethras
Varric Tethras is a surface-dwelling dwarf, renowned storyteller, and a key companion in the Dragon Age series who plays a pivotal role in the conflicts involving the city of Kirkwall and the Inquisition.
Background
Varric Tethras is a member of the dwarven Merchants Guild and the brother of Bartrand Tethras. Unlike most of his kin, Varric resides on the surface and possesses a charismatic, roguish personality that often masks his deeper loyalties. He is rarely seen without his signature heavy crossbow, which he affectionately named Bianca. His storytelling prowess serves as the framing device for the events of Dragon Age II, where he recounts the rise of the Champion of Kirkwall to the seeker Cassandra Pentaghast.
Role in Thedas
Varric's influence extends far beyond his role as a narrator. During the mage-templar conflict in Kirkwall, he became a central figure in the political instability of the Free Marches. Following these events, he joined the Inquisition to help restore order to Thedas, eventually serving as a trusted advisor to the Inquisitor. His connections within the criminal underworld and his sharp wit make him an invaluable asset in navigating the complex political landscape of the continent.
