Dragon Age II

Dragon Age II is a 2011 action role-playing game that follows the rise of Hawke, a refugee who becomes the Champion of Kirkwall amidst escalating tensions between mages and templars.

Developed by BioWare, Dragon Age II shifts the focus from the epic scope of its predecessor to a more intimate, decade-long narrative set within the city-state of Kirkwall. Players assume the role of Hawke, a survivor of the Blight who rises from poverty to become a central political figure. The story is framed as a recollection by Varric Tethras, providing a unique perspective on the events that eventually lead to a continent-wide conflict.

Gameplay and Legacy

The game introduced a faster, more action-oriented combat system compared to the tactical focus of Dragon Age: Origins. It is widely recognised for its emphasis on character-driven storytelling and the consequences of moral choices, which significantly impact the social and political landscape of the Free Marches. The events depicted in the game serve as the primary catalyst for the mage-templar war that defines the later entry, Dragon Age: Inquisition.
