Orlais

Orlais is the largest and most culturally influential human empire on the continent of Thedas, known for its intricate political games and devout support of the Chantry.

Orlais is a powerful nation located in southern Thedas, governed by an emperor or empress from the capital city of Val Royeaux. The empire is defined by its rigid social hierarchy, where nobility engage in the Great Game, a complex system of political maneuvering, espionage, and social posturing that dictates the rise and fall of aristocratic houses. This obsession with status and appearances often shapes the diplomatic landscape of the continent.

Cultural and Religious Significance

The empire serves as the seat of the Chantry, with the Divine residing in the Grand Cathedral of Val Royeaux. This religious centrality grants Orlais immense soft power over other nations, including Ferelden. The Orlesian culture is characterised by a love for masks, elaborate fashion, and the arts, which mask a ruthless approach to foreign policy. Historically, Orlais maintained a long-standing occupation of Ferelden, a conflict that deeply influenced the motivations of figures such as Loghain Mac Tir.

Military and Influence

Orlais maintains a formidable military presence, notably the Chevaliers, an elite order of knights who are bound by a strict code of honour and service to the throne. Their influence extends across borders, often causing friction with neighbours who fear Orlesian expansionism. During times of crisis, such as the threat of a Blight, the empire's resources and political weight are essential, though their involvement is frequently met with suspicion by those who remember their past attempts at conquest.
