The Chantry

The Chantry is the dominant religious institution in Thedas, dedicated to the worship of the Maker and the teachings of the Prophet Andraste.

The Chantry serves as the primary spiritual and political authority across much of Thedas, promoting the belief that humanity was abandoned by the Maker due to their sins. Central to its doctrine is the life of the Prophet Andraste, whose sacrifice and teachings form the basis of the Chant of Light. The organisation is led by the Divine, who resides in the Grand Cathedral in Val Royeaux, and maintains a vast network of temples and clergy throughout the continent.

Structure and Influence

The institution exerts control over the use of magic through the Circle of Magi, an organisation overseen by the Chantry to monitor and restrict mages. The military arm of the faith, the Templar Order, is tasked with enforcing these restrictions and hunting down apostates. Characters such as Wynne and Leliana have deep ties to the Chantry, reflecting its pervasive influence on the lives of individuals across various nations and social strata.

Despite its widespread reach, the Chantry faces constant challenges from internal corruption and external threats. Its rigid stance on magic and its historical role in the Exalted Marches have often placed it at the centre of political tension, affecting the fates of figures like Alistair Theirin and Loghain Mac Tir as they navigate the complex power structures of Ferelden.
