Thedas

Thedas is the primary continent upon which the Dragon Age franchise is set, serving as a land defined by deep-seated political tensions, ancient history, and the constant threat of the Blight.

Thedas is a vast continent home to various nations and cultures, including the human kingdoms of Ferelden and Orlais, the dwarven subterranean empire of Orzammar, and the Qunari territories. The name itself is an acronym for The Dragon Age Setting, a term originally used by developers before becoming the official in-universe name for the continent. It is a land shaped by the legacy of the Tevinter Imperium, the rise of the Chantry, and the cyclical devastation caused by the darkspawn.

Geography and Politics

  • Ferelden: A rugged nation known for its strong warrior culture and the site of the Fifth Blight.
  • Orlais: A sophisticated and politically volatile empire that exerts significant influence over the Chantry.
  • The Deep Roads: A massive network of tunnels connecting dwarven cities, now largely infested by darkspawn.

Political intrigue is a constant factor in Thedas, often involving the Grey Wardens, who are the only force capable of effectively combating the darkspawn. Heroes such as Alistair Theirin and Leliana have played pivotal roles in navigating the complex alliances required to protect the continent from total destruction. Characters like Morrigan and Loghain Mac Tir represent the moral ambiguity often found within the history of Thedas, where the line between salvation and ruin is frequently blurred.
