Shire

The Shire is a peaceful, agrarian region in the north-west of Middle-earth primarily inhabited by Hobbits.

The Shire serves as the ancestral homeland of the Hobbits, a secluded and pastoral land located within the kingdom of Arnor. It is known for its rolling green hills, fertile farmland, and the simple, quiet lifestyle of its residents, who prefer to avoid the complexities and dangers of the wider world. The region is divided into four main Farthings and is governed by the Thain and the Mayor of Michel Delving.

Significance in the War of the Ring

Despite its isolation, the Shire became the catalyst for the quest to destroy the One Ring. It is the home of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took, whose journey began when Gandalf the Grey arrived at Bag End to set them on their path. The Shire's innocence stands in stark contrast to the encroaching darkness of Sauron, and its protection remains a primary motivation for the heroes throughout their travels alongside allies such as Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas Greenleaf.
