Bag End

Bag End is a luxurious hobbit-hole located in Hobbiton that serves as the ancestral home of the Baggins family and the starting point for several major quests in Middle-earth.

History

Bag End was built by Bungo Baggins for his wife, Belladonna Took, and is situated at the top of Bagshot Row in the Shire. It is renowned for its comfort, featuring numerous rooms, wood-panelled walls, and a well-stocked pantry. The residence is famously associated with Bilbo Baggins and later his heir, Frodo Baggins.

Significance

The residence serves as the primary setting for the beginning of the quest to destroy the One Ring. It is where Gandalf the Grey arrives to recruit Bilbo for his adventure to the Lonely Mountain and later where he meets Frodo to initiate the journey to Rivendell. The property is also a frequent gathering place for characters such as Meriadoc Brandybuck, Peregrin Took, and Samwise Gamgee.

Following the departure of Frodo Baggins, the property is briefly occupied by the Sackville-Baggins family before eventually being returned to the control of the hobbits. It remains a symbol of the peaceful, pastoral life of the Shire that the protagonists strive to protect throughout their perilous journeys.
