Bard the Bowman

Bard the Bowman was a skilled archer and the captain of the guard in Lake-town who became a national hero after slaying the dragon Smaug.

Bard was a descendant of Girion, the last Lord of Dale, and served as a captain in the town of Esgaroth. During the attack on Lake-town by the dragon Smaug, Bard stood his ground when others fled. Utilising a tip provided by a thrush, he fired his final Black Arrow into a bare patch on the dragon's underbelly, successfully killing the beast and ending its reign of terror.

Following the destruction of his home, Bard led the survivors of Lake-town and sought a portion of the dragon's hoard to rebuild. This pursuit brought him into conflict with Thorin Oakenshield and the dwarves of Erebor, eventually leading to the Battle of the Five Armies. After the conflict, Bard was crowned the King of Dale, restoring the kingdom of his ancestors and fostering an era of peace and prosperity in the region.
