First Age

The First Age was the foundational era of Middle-earth history, defined by the long conflict between the Elves and the Dark Lord Morgoth over the possession of the Silmarils.

The First Age began with the rising of the Sun and followed the arrival of the Noldor Elves in Middle-earth to reclaim the Silmarils, which had been stolen by Morgoth. This period was marked by massive wars, the establishment of great elven kingdoms such as Gondolin and Doriath, and the first interactions between Elves and the race of Men. It was a time of immense heroism and tragedy that shaped the geography and political landscape of the world for millennia to come.

The War of Wrath

The age concluded with the War of Wrath, a cataclysmic conflict between the Valar and Morgoth that resulted in the destruction of the northern continent of Beleriand. The sinking of these lands beneath the sea fundamentally altered the map of Middle-earth, leaving behind the coastal regions known to characters like Aragorn or Gandalf the Grey in later eras. The legacy of the First Age remains central to the lore of the world, serving as the historical backdrop for the heroic struggles faced by Frodo Baggins and his companions during the Third Age.
