Gandalf

Gandalf is a powerful wizard and one of the Istari sent to Middle-earth to guide the free peoples in the struggle against the Dark Lord Sauron.

Origins and Role

Gandalf is a Maia, a divine spirit sent to Middle-earth by the Valar to oppose the growing shadow of Sauron. Arriving in the Third Age, he initially appeared as Gandalf the Grey, a wandering wizard known for his wisdom, affinity for fireworks, and mastery of fire-based magic. He serves as a mentor and strategist, most notably orchestrating the quest to destroy the One Ring.

Influence and Transformation

His guidance is pivotal to the success of the Fellowship, as he provides essential counsel to Frodo Baggins and the other members of the group, including Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas Greenleaf, Meriadoc Brandybuck, Peregrin Took, and Samwise Gamgee. Following his battle with the Balrog in the mines of Moria, he is resurrected as Gandalf the White, possessing greater power and authority to lead the forces of the West against the armies of Mordor.
