Mithrandir

Mithrandir is the Sindarin name for the wizard known as Gandalf, used primarily by the Elves of Middle-earth to denote his role as a wanderer and guide.

Etymology and Significance

The name Mithrandir translates from Sindarin as Grey Pilgrim or Grey Wanderer. It reflects the wizard's long-standing commitment to travelling across Middle-earth to monitor the growing threat of Sauron and to provide counsel to the free peoples. While he is known as Gandalf the Grey to the Men of the North and the Hobbits of the Shire, the Elves prefer this title to acknowledge his status as one of the Istari.

Role in the War of the Ring

As Mithrandir, the wizard served as the primary strategist and spiritual guide for the Fellowship of the Ring. His influence was instrumental in uniting characters such as Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas Greenleaf, as well as the four hobbits Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took. By maintaining his guise as a wanderer, he was able to move freely between kingdoms, gathering intelligence and fostering alliances that ultimately proved essential to the defeat of the Dark Lord.
