Kobol

Kobol is a lush, life-supporting planet located in the Milky Way galaxy, believed to be the birthplace of humanity and the cradle of Colonial civilisation. According to the Sacred Scrolls, humans lived on Kobol alongside their gods, known as the Lords of Kobol, whose worship became the primary religion of the Colonies. The planet has been abandoned for at least 2000 years, with its surface now dotted by the ruins of a once-great civilisation, including the City of the Gods, the Kobol Opera House, and the Tomb of Athena.

Approximately 4000 years before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, an "unknown struggle" led to the "Thirteenth Tribe" leaving Kobol in search of a world they named Earth. Centuries later, a second catastrophe, known as "The Blaze", destroyed much of Kobolian society, resulting in the "Exodus of the Twelve Tribes". These twelve tribes departed on a vessel called the Galleon, eventually settling the worlds that would become the Twelve Colonies of Man. During their voyage, a computer failure led to a technological dark age, and much of the knowledge of Kobol was lost, passing into legend and religious texts like the Scrolls of Pythia.

The rediscovery of Kobol by the ragtag fleet after the Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies became a pivotal moment in their journey. President Laura Roslin, guided by the prophecies in the Sacred Scrolls, believed finding the Tomb of Athena on Kobol, and specifically the Arrow of Apollo, would reveal the path to the mythical Earth. This quest led to significant internal conflict within the fleet, including a temporary schism between Roslin and Commander William Adama, highlighting Kobol's profound religious and cultural importance to the surviving Colonials. The planet's ruins also held clues to the true history of humanity and the Cylons, including the revelation that the Thirteenth Tribe was, in fact, composed of Cylons.
