From The Matrix wiki

Thomas Anderson

Thomas Anderson is the birth name of the individual known as Neo, a human hacker who discovers he is living within a simulated reality created by machines.

Thomas Anderson lived a double life as a mild-mannered computer programmer for the software company Metacortex by day and a notorious hacker known as Neo by night. While he appeared to be an ordinary citizen, he was plagued by a persistent sense that something was fundamentally wrong with the world around him. This search for the truth eventually led him to make contact with Morpheus and his crew.

Upon choosing the red pill, Anderson was freed from the Matrix and learned that his entire existence had been a digital construct designed to keep humanity enslaved as a power source for sentient machines. As he embraced his new identity as Neo, he became the central figure in the human resistance and the prophesied One capable of manipulating the simulated environment to fight against the agents of the system.
