Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane
Rosco P. Coltrane is the corrupt and perpetually frustrated Sheriff of Hazzard County who serves as the primary law enforcement antagonist to the Duke family.
Background
Rosco P. Coltrane is the long-serving Sheriff of Hazzard County, known for his distinctive laugh and his subservience to his brother-in-law, Commissioner Jefferson Davis Hogg. Driven by a desire for wealth and the hope of eventually receiving a pension, Rosco frequently participates in Boss Hogg's illegal schemes. He is often accompanied by his loyal Basset Hound, Flash, who is frequently treated with more affection than his fellow deputies.
Role in Hazzard County
Despite his position, Rosco is largely incompetent, often falling for the tricks of Bo Duke and Luke Duke. His attempts to apprehend the cousins in their car, the General Lee, almost always end in spectacular crashes or failure. While he is portrayed as a villainous character, he occasionally displays moments of genuine kindness or cowardice that humanise him, distinguishing him from the more calculating nature of Boss Hogg.
