Petruchio

Background

Petruchio is a boisterous and eccentric character who travels to Padua seeking a wife with a substantial dowry. Upon learning of the wealthy Katherine Minola, who is widely regarded as a shrew due to her sharp tongue and volatile temperament, he resolves to woo and wed her regardless of her reputation.

The Taming

Following his marriage to Katherine Minola, Petruchio employs a series of psychological tactics intended to break her spirit and force her into submission. By denying her food and sleep under the guise of concern, he eventually succeeds in transforming her into an obedient wife, a process that remains the central conflict and defining narrative arc of the play.
