The Bionic Woman

Jaime Sommers was a professional tennis player and the childhood sweetheart of Steve Austin, growing up in Ojai, California. Their romance rekindled, leading to an engagement. However, tragedy struck during a skydiving excursion when Jaime's parachute malfunctioned, causing her to plummet to the ground and sustain critical injuries, including crushed legs, a damaged right arm, and severe head trauma affecting her right ear.

At Austin's insistence, the OSI, under the direction of Oscar Goldman and Dr. Rudy Wells, performed experimental bionic surgery to save her life, similar to the procedure that saved Austin. Jaime received bionic replacements for both legs, her right arm, and an amplified bionic right ear. These implants granted her superhuman strength, the ability to run at speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour, jump great distances, and possess enhanced hearing over long distances.

Initially, Jaime's body rejected the bionic implants, leading to a cerebral clot and what was believed to be her death. However, due to an overwhelming positive public response to the character, she was revived through radical cryogenic procedures. This revival came with a cost: retrograde amnesia, causing her to lose all memory of her past relationship with Steve Austin. She subsequently became an occasional secret agent for the OSI, often operating undercover as a schoolteacher, and frequently collaborated with Austin on missions.

The character of Jaime Sommers, portrayed by Lindsay Wagner, first appeared in a two-part episode of The Six Million Dollar Man in 1975. Her immense popularity led to her own spin-off series, "The Bionic Woman," which aired from 1976 to 1978. The series was significant for featuring a strong female lead in a science fiction action genre, which was traditionally male-dominated. Jaime and Steve eventually married in later reunion television films.
