From Cat on a Hot Tin Roof wiki

Skipper

Skipper is a deceased former professional football player and the close friend of Brick Pollitt whose suicide serves as a central catalyst for the emotional conflict in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Skipper was a college football teammate and professional partner of Brick Pollitt. Following their playing careers, the two men entered into a sports broadcasting venture together. His life ended by suicide, an event that deeply traumatised Brick and contributed significantly to his descent into alcoholism and emotional detachment from his wife, Maggie.

Significance to the narrative

The nature of the relationship between Skipper and Brick remains a focal point of tension within the Pollitt family. Maggie suspects that their bond contained latent homosexual undertones, a belief that led her to confront Skipper about his feelings for her husband. This confrontation, and the subsequent guilt Brick feels over his failure to support his friend during his final days, drives the central domestic drama of the play.
