Ida Pollitt

Ida Pollitt is the matriarch of the wealthy Mississippi Delta family and the wife of Big Daddy Pollitt in the play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Ida Pollitt, commonly referred to as Big Mama, is a central figure in the Pollitt household. She is portrayed as a devoted, albeit often overlooked, wife who remains deeply attached to her husband, Big Daddy, despite his frequent verbal cruelty and his obvious preference for their son, Brick.

Her character serves as a poignant representation of the strained dynamics within the family. While she attempts to maintain a facade of domestic harmony and familial unity, she is frequently undermined by the underlying tensions regarding the family inheritance and the truth about Big Daddy's health. Her desperate need for affection and validation from her husband highlights the emotional void at the centre of the Pollitt estate.
