David Hasselhoff

David Hasselhoff is best known in the Baywatch universe for his portrayal of Mitchell "Mitch" Buchannon, the steadfast and dedicated Los Angeles County Lifeguard. From the series' inception, Mitch served as the primary protagonist and moral compass, evolving from a lieutenant to a captain within the Baywatch unit. He was consistently depicted as a serious and skilled lifeguard, deeply committed to saving lives and upholding the safety of the beaches.

Mitch Buchannon's character was pivotal to the series' longevity, often acting as a mentor and father figure to the rotating cast of younger lifeguards. His personal life, including his relationship with his son, Hobie, and various romantic entanglements, frequently intertwined with his professional duties, providing much of the show's dramatic narrative. He appeared in every season of the original Baywatch series, including its relocation to Hawaii, and was considered the anchor of the team.

Beyond his primary role in Baywatch, Hasselhoff also starred as Mitch Buchannon in the spin-off series Baywatch Nights. Initially, this show saw Mitch balancing his lifeguard duties with work as a private investigator, alongside former police sergeant Garner Ellerbee. The second season of Baywatch Nights took a significant tonal shift, moving into a science-fiction and paranormal mystery format. Mitch was seemingly killed in an underwater explosion at the end of Baywatch: Hawaii's first season, but later returned alive in the 2003 television film, Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding, having survived and recovered from amnesia. Hasselhoff also made a cameo appearance as a different, older Mitch Buchannon in the 2017 Baywatch film, serving as a mentor to the new generation of lifeguards.
