The Avengers

The Avengers are a United States-based organisation composed primarily of superpowered and gifted individuals, described as "Earth's Mightiest Heroes". The team was conceived by S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury as the "Avengers Initiative" in 1995, following the appearance of Carol Danvers. Its purpose is to defend Earth from imminent global and extraterrestrial threats that individual heroes cannot handle alone.

The team officially assembled in 2012 in response to Loki Laufeyson's invasion of Earth with the Chitauri army, an event known as the Battle of New York. The original roster included Tony Stark / Iron Man, Steve Rogers / Captain America, Thor Odinson, Bruce Banner / Hulk, Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow, and Clint Barton / Hawkeye. They were initially based at the Avengers Tower in Midtown Manhattan, later moving to the Avengers Compound in Upstate New York.

The Avengers are central to the MCU's overarching narrative, particularly throughout the first 23 films, collectively known as the Infinity Saga. Their formation marked a pivotal moment, demonstrating the potential of a shared cinematic universe and setting a new standard for superhero team-up films. The team's evolution, conflicts, and sacrifices, especially during their confrontations with Thanos, have profoundly shaped the MCU. While the original iteration effectively disbanded after the Battle of Earth, new incarnations and teams inspired by the Avengers continue to emerge within the Multiverse Saga.
