    A former detective, Austen, suddenly shoots a man and forces Hammer to kill him. There doesn't seem to be an explanation so Hammer is determined to find out why. The only clue is a mysterious blonde woman with a marked dime. However, nobody knows who the blonde is. Hammer next visits the psychiatrist who has been treating him. After meeting Austen's employer Hammer is still not sure what is going on. When Hammer breaks in and steals his psychiatric report things start to make sense. And when more bodies start appearing, the common link is the psychiatric clinic.

    A fashion designer approaches Hammer for some help but she is murdered before she can explain what she wants. A criminal, Kenny the Knife, Hammer had put away had just been paroled and had sworn revenge so it is believed Hammer was the target. However, Hammer investigates the fashion house anyway. Another attempt on his life brings the attention back to Kenny. A chance sighting at the race track changes the focus of Hammer's investigation back to the fashion house when one of the suppliers is in debt to a mob bookie. It also seems to be that there is money disappearing and it is up to Hammer to find who is committing the fraud. It turns out that the reason people are dying is much bigger.

Hammer finds the girl's pimp but also finds out that there have been a number of young hookers have been strangled and discarded. The clue is a mysterious black limousine.
